Report: Monitoring technologies in palliative care: ethical and legal aspects (workshop)
Abstract
On 21 April 2026, IRLaB organised the workshop 'Monitoring technologies in palliative care', as part of the HOLDEN-Care project. We were joined by different healthcare providers to analyse the medical, ethical, and legal conundrums of using radio-frequency sensing in palliative care patients.
During the keynote talk, given by MUDr. Adam Houska, the workshop participants had the opportunity to learn more about the project's goals, gain familiarity with the use of different AI-powered technologies for palliative care, and learn how the use of radio-frequency sensing can improve in-home medical treatment. Later, as part of the project's aim to design and develop value-sensitive technologies for healthcare purposes, we were joined by Dr Sage Cammers-Goodwin, who organised the second part of the workshop to collect the participants' ideas and experiences in palliative care. They could also learn in more detail how IRLaB's team deployed radio-frequency sensing radars at patients' houses and then interviewed them to gain insights into their experiences living with the technologies. The workshop's main outcome was to collect the views of the participating healthcare providers to be able to include them in the design process of the technology being designed by other HOLDEN researchers.
