Ethical Tech for Palliative Care Workshop

Abstract

We invite medical professionals, friends and families with experience in palliative care to give us insight and input to research on value-sensitive design (VSD) - a new palliative care technology. Radio Frequency waves are being explored as a new method to ubiquitously and, hopefully, unobtrusively monitor patients. The research workshop will entail working both individually and in groups.

We are currently conducting studies with scientists at AALTO university. We believe that it is important to expand on the patient perspective by learning from those who work with and care for palliative care patients. In order to ethically guide our research and design we are conducting a Value Sensitive Design workshop, to formulate design requirements for the technology. All insights will be collected anonymously. We thank you in advance for your time, insights, and participation.

By participating in this workshop, you will contribute to research done through HOLDEN, an international European Innovation Grant with the goal of creating ethical radio frequency wave holography. Essentially, partners in the project are developing technology to use WIFI to monitor those moving through the environment.

HOLDEN team investigates how radio frequency ubiquitous sensing can be used to make ethical, value embedded palliative care systems. Additionally, we are studying how medical care professionals and loved ones of palliative care patients approach the issue of ethical design and what methodologies may empower morality driven science.

Participation involves anonymized contribution through digital surveys and observational notes. Anonymous quotations may be used for our research. Collaborators may stop participating at any time, even after signing the consent form. We offer tea, coffee, and snacks as we discuss the potential of this emerging technology.

What Happens with the Data?
Observational notes and form responses will be organized and further anonymized (if necessary). This dataset will be used for continued research related to RF Monitoring.
